Top 10 connection tips

Recommended for optimal broadband connection

1. Connecting your computer
You should connect your computer via a DSL filter and your broadband modem to a phone socket in your home. We recommend that for the best broadband connection you should use the master phone socket.

2. Connecting DSL filters
You must plug a DSL filter into every phone socket in your home where you are using a phone, a fax or a 56Kbps dial-up modem.

3. Use no more than four phone sockets
Make sure you do not have more than four phone sockets with filters in your home, otherwise your broadband service will be affected.

4. Extension cables
If you need an extension cable to connect your computer to the master phone socket, do NOT use one more than 10 metres long and make sure that it has an RJ11 connector at each end.

5. Download AOL Security Suite
The AOL Security Suite is a collection of programs designed to address all of your security needs. This will help provide your PC with the maximum protection possible.

6. Keep your dial-up modem
Don't remove your original 56Kbps modem when you upgrade from dial-up. You can continue to access help for broadband when you sign on with your dial-up connection at Broadband Help if you have broadband connection problems*.

7. Download McAfee® Personal Firewall Plus
Download the McAfee® Personal Firewall Plus, available at no extra cost with your broadband account, to protect your computer from hackers. Visit Firewall.

8. Check for spyware
Spyware can slow down your PC and is a prime cause of connection problems. We recommend that you run spyware protection such as Ad-Aware or Spybot - Search & Destroy regularly.

9. Run Computer Check-Up
Run AOL Computer Check-Up every week to ensure that your computer gets a regular "housekeeping" check-up to allow it to run more smoothly. Sign on to AOL and go to Keyword: Computer Check-Up.

10. Check for Windows Updates
Run Microsoft Windows Update regularly by visiting www.microsoft.com, to enhance the security and performance of your Windows operating system.

*Unless you are on a price plan that includes dial-up connection, 0845 call charges will apply.
