Can I use other internet software with AOL?
In many cases, you can use other internet applications (web browsers, file transfer software, chat, games software, etc.) over your AOL connection, if they support standard Winsock connectivity. Just sign on to AOL as normal, then minimise the AOL software and start using the Internet software in question.
The main exception to this would be email and newsgroup readers, which are currently not supported by AOL for technical reasons.
As we do not offer support on third-party software, we can only redirect you to the correct place for you to obtain the relevant information needed to answer your query. For the information you have been seeking we recommend that you read the directions listed below as they may include some small guidelines to assist with your query.
Third Party FTP Software
Using third-party FTP software to upload your web pages to AOL is neither supported nor recommended by us. However, the following are guidelines for doing so if you wish to try. Please note that we do not guarantee this will work.
- Sign on to AOL as normal under the screen name you are going to upload to.
- In your FTP software, enter the following as the sitename/host address: members.aol.com.
- For the User ID/login, enter the following: Anonymous.
- For the Password enter the following:
YourScreenName@aol.com.
You should now have full write access to your web space (both CuteFTP and WS_FTP Pro have been seen to work doing this).
As mentioned previously we do not offer support or assistance with this method.
Third-Party Email Software
At the moment there is only one other email program you can use to retrieve your AOL email and that is Netscape Mail. You can download Netscape Mail from AOL Keyword: Netscape.
