Configuring a Thomson SpeedTouch 110g wireless adapter

This document describes how to install the SpeedTouch 110g wireless PCMCIA adapter on a computer running Windows 2000 or Windows XP. We recommend that you print this guide to use as a reference.

The SpeedTouch 110g is an 802.11g-enabled wireless adapter that is used to connect a computer to a wireless router, allowing that computer access to the shared internet connection.


Set up your modem router

It is recommended that you setup your AOL supported modem router using the AOL Easy Installer or manufacturers CD before you setup your wireless adapter. When you set up your modem router, we recommend that you enable the security features to keep your wireless network protected.

If your modem router supports WPA, we recommend that you use this method as it is more secure than the older WEP standard. You will be asked for a Wireless Network Name (SSID) and a Network or Encryption Key (Passphrase). Please take note of these as you will need them later when you add your computer to your wireless network.

If your modem router does not support WPA, please use WEP 128-bit encryption and note the Wireless Network Name (SSID) and Wireless Network Password (WEP128 Passphrase).


Install and connect your wireless adapter

To begin the installation, insert the manufacturer's CD into your computers CD-ROM drive before inserting the card. You must follow the installation process and ONLY insert the card into your computer when prompted.

When the CD is inserted in the machine, it should auto-run.
Note: If it does not run automatically, double-click My Computer on your Windows desktop, then right-click your CD-ROM drive and choose Auto-play. If the installation screen still does not appear, double-click the CD-ROM drive, then double-click ezsetup.exe. The Wireless LAN Wizard page will be displayed.

To install your wireless adapter:

1. A number of screens will appear as the installation progresses. You do not need to take any action until you are prompted to plug in the wireless adapter.

2. When this message appears, insert the adapter into the available PCMCIA slot on the computer, usually found on the side of a laptop. You may have to remove a plastic placeholder prior to inserting the adapter. The computer will detect the new device and configure it for use.



3. Depending on the operating system you are running on your computer, you may be asked to specify some extra settings.

4. Select No, not at this time, where a screen appears asking to connect to Windows Update, then click Next.

5. Again, depending on the operating system you are running on your computer, you may be asked to confirm the installation of the software. Select the Recommended option, then click Next.

6. Click Finish.

7. An InstallShield Wizard Complete window will be displayed. Ensure that you have closed all other programs and that any open documents have been saved, then click Finish.

This will automatically restart your computer.


Connect to your wireless network


Windows XP, 2000, ME and 98SE users:

Once your computer has restarted, a SpeedTouch icon will appear on your desktop. Double-click this icon to bring up the SpeedTouch 110g Wireless Monitor window.

This screen allows you to select a wireless network to connect to. Once you have established the connection between the wireless adapter and your modem router, your home network is in place and you will be able to access the internet.

To connect your computer to your wireless network:

1. Double-click the SpeedTouch icon.
2. Click the Site Survey tab, then click the Scan button. The utility will scan for all wireless networks that are in range.
3. When you set up your wireless modem router you were asked for a Wireless Network Name (see step 1). Locate this name in the list and highlight it.
4. Click the Configuration tab and select your wireless network name.
5. Click the Security tab (within the Configuration section). By default the security is set to off. Click the Security OFF button so that it becomes Security ON.
6. If your modem router uses WPA encryption, set Authentication Type to WPA-PSK and enter the passphrase you created when you set up your modem router into the Shared Secret Key box. This needs to be entered exactly as it was entered on your modem router.

Note: If your modem router does not support WPA encryption, set Authentication Type to WEP. Change the Key Type to 104/128bit encryption, tick the option to Use Passphrase, and enter the Wireless Network Password that your chose when you setup your wireless modem router.

7. Click Apply Change.

The final page displayed is a summary of your wireless network settings, the signal strength will vary depending on where you position your wireless router and where you are using your computer at the time. Click Exit to minimise the summary page.

Windows Vista users:

1. Open the Windows Vista configuration tool by clicking the Network icon in the system tray.
2. When you set up your wireless modem router you were asked for a Wireless Network Name (see step 1). Locate this name in the list and highlight it.
3. Click Connect.
4. If security has been enabled on the network, you will be prompted to enter the passphrase you created when you set up your modem router. This needs to be entered exactly as it was entered on your modem router.


Connect to AOL


To set up AOL to work on your home network, you need to change the settings to connect via your modem router.

1. Start AOL but do not sign on. Instead, click Sign On Options or Connect Options on the sign-on screen.
2. Click Expert Setup.
3. Click Add Location.
4. Type a name for the location in the Location Name box (eg Router), then click Next.
5. Choose Broadband (High-Speed, cable, DSL, or other ISP), then click Next.
6. Tick Automatically reconnect me and ignore interruptions... then click Next.
7. Select Automatic Connection, then click Next.
8. Click Sign on to AOL now, then sign on to AOL as usual using any of your screen names.

The next time you start the AOL software, you'll notice 'Router' (or whatever name you gave the location) is available as one of the options in the Location box. This allows you to easily switch between using a modem router connection and a different connection (for example, a dial-up modem) if you wish.
