Copy or transfer Favourite Places

There may come a time when you will want to copy or transfer your Favourite Places to another screen name, another computer, or even another service.

We recommend you save or print a copy of this document for future reference.

Transfer your Favourite Places to another screen name

Transferring your Favourite Places to another screen name depends on the version of AOL software you are using.

Transfer your Favourite Places with AOL 9.0 VR:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click the Favourites button.
2. In the Favourite Places window, click the Manage button.
3. Select Save My Favourite Places as a Favourites File on my Computer.
4. You can save the Favourites file to the directory and file indicated on the Save Folder window, or you can choose another name for the file and a folder to save it in.
5. Click the Save button.
6. Switch to the screen name to which you want to copy your Favourite Places.
7. On the AOL toolbar, click the Favourites button.
8. Click the Manage button.
9. Select one of the following:

  • Replace My Favourite Places with a Favourites File: Use this option to overwrite your current list of Favourite Places.
  • Append a Favourites File to My Favourite Places: Use this option to supplement your existing list with the Favourites from your other screen name.
10. Highlight the Favourite Places.pfc file (or the new name you created) then click the Open button.

Note: You can share your list of favourite places with a friend who also uses AOL 9.0 VR by sending your saved PFC file via email and having him or her follow steps 6 - 10 above.

Transfer your Favourite Places with AOL 8.0:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click My Favourites.
2. In the Favourite Places window, click the Save/Replace button.
3. Select Save My Favourite Places as a Favourites File on my Computer, then click the OK button.
4. Choose a name for the file and a folder to save it in, then click the Save button.
5. Switch to the screen name to which you want to copy your Favourite Places.
6. On the AOL toolbar, click My Favourites.
7. Click the Save/Replace button.
8. Select one of the following:
  • Replace My Favourite Places with a Favourites File: Use this option to overwrite your current list of Favourite Places.
  • Append a Favourites File to My Favourite Places: Use this option to supplement your existing list with the Favourites from your other screen name.
9. Click the OK button.
10. Select the Favourite Places.pfc file (or the new name you created), then click the Open button.

Note: You can share your list of Favourite Places with a buddy also using AOL 8.0 by sending your saved PFC file via e-mail and having him or her follow steps 6 - 10 above.

Transfer your Favourite Places with AOL 6.0 or 7.0:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click My Favourites or Favourite Places.
2. In the Favourite Places window, click the Save/Replace button.
3. Select the Save the Favourite Places for your current screen name option, then click the OK button. The Save Folder window will appear. (You can accept the default file name [Favourite Places.pfc] or type a new name. The default location is the Download folder in your AOL folder.
4. Click the Save button.
5. Switch to the screen name (or computer) to which you want to copy your Favourite Places.
6. On the AOL toolbar, click My Favourites or Favourite Places.
7. Click the Save/Replace button.
8. Select the Replace the Favourite Places for your current screen name option, then click the OK button.
9. In the Select File to Restore window, select the Favourite Places.pfc file (or the new name you created), then click the Open button.


Note: To transfer your Favourite Places to another computer, you must save the Favourite Places.pfc file to a floppy disk or another, larger form of removable storage such as a Zip disk.

Copy and paste Favourite Places to another program

If you wish to copy hyperlinks or web addresses from your AOL Favourite Places and transfer them to another program, you will need to use the copy and paste option.

To copy the hyperlinks from your AOL Favourite Places to another program:

1. Sign on to AOL, click Favourites, then click Favourite Places to launch the Favourite Places window.
Note: For AOL 9.0 VR or higher, click the Favourites button.
2. Right-click an entry, then select Edit or Modify.
3. Highlight the website address in the Enter the Internet Address box, right-click, then select Copy.
4. Open the destination program, right-click the location where you would like to paste the address, then click Paste.
5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each Favourite you wish to transfer.
