Could there be reasons why my usage is a lot higher than I might expect it to be?

If you are surprised you are rate limited, you should check the security of your wireless network. It is possible for someone else to use your network if it is not secure. This is more likely if you live close to other dwellings. We advise our members always to secure their network. It is easy to do. See Help or Home Networking for details

Similarly, if there are multiple users of the connection in the same household, for example other family members, investigate the possibility that someone else might be making extreme use of the broadband connection.

If you discover someone else has had unauthorised access to your broadband connection, you should firstly ensure that you make your network secure. Once this is done the unauthorised user will be disconnected and no longer have access to your internet connection.
