Identifying types of email
The email icons in your mailbox are designed to help you quickly distinguish whether the email is from someone you know and whether it has an attached file or picture embedded in it. Email with embedded images have a small square in the email icon. Email with attachments have a small disk image in the email icon.
Email types
In the New Email folder (or Inbox, depending on your settings), the column with the envelope icon is used to identify special message types. Normal messages do not have an icon.
Email types and their icons
Messages can be grouped in the order listed below by clicking on the icon to toggle between ascending or descending. For these special messages, the type and the related icon are as follows:
- Flagged for follow-up: An orange flag
- BillPay Email: A green envelope
- File attached: A paper clip
- Unknown sender: A question mark
- Bulk Email: A down arrow
Email from AOL or AOL Members
Official email from AOL or AOL members can be visually distinguished from other email messages in two ways: the envelope with the AOL Logo in the online mailbox, and the seal in the upper left corner of the email border. These extra security features will help you distinguish email from AOL or an AOL member who is using specific features from email that appears to be from AOL.
Official AOL Email
Official AOL Email will always include three attributes:
1. A blue envelope in your online mailbox.

2. A dark blue border instead of cream or light blue around the opened email message.
3. The Official AOL Email seal in the upper left corner of the email border.
For more information see Official AOL Mail - Your questions answered.
Priority AOL Email
Priority AOL Email may contain content from AOL, from other members, or a combination of both. When members interact with certain AOL products they can create content to be included in Priority AOL Email. For example, when a member creates an Address Card, the Address Card subscription invitation will be emailed out to all screen names selected by the member, along with a personal invitation to subscribe. Priority AOL Email will always contain:
1. A yellow envelope in your online mailbox.
2. The Priority AOL Email seal in the upper left corner of the email border.
Certified Email
AOL Certified Email will always include two attributes:
1. A green envelope in your online mailbox.
2. An AOL Certified Email seal in the upper left corner of the email border.
