Error: Connection to the host timed out

This error occurs when the time taken to communicate with the AOL Broadband host system was too long and the connection timed out.

In order to fix this problem, please work through the following steps:

Configure your firewall to allow the AOL software

An active firewall on your computer could restrict the AOL software from making a connection. If you have firewall software installed, please configure it to allow the AOL software to access the internet.

Select your firewall below for steps on how to modify the firewall security to allow the AOL software to work with the firewall software. We recommend that you contact the firewall software supplier if you require any further information.

Windows 7
Windows Firewall
McAfee® Personal Firewall
McAfee® 2007
Norton 2003/2005
Norton Firewall 2007
ZoneAlarm 2.6 or 3.0
BlackICE
PC-cillin
AVG Firewall

Reinstall Dial-Up Networking

Please note: This is applicable to Windows 98 and Windows ME only.

ADSL uses Dial-Up Networking (DUN) to connect to AOL. From time to time the Dial-Up Networking settings may become corrupted and will need to be deleted and reinstalled.

For instructions on how to this, see Uninstalling and reinstalling Dial-Up Networking.

Purge the MAIN.IDX file

The AOL software stores a copy of images you view online in a cache. This helps to make web pages load faster.

If this cache is full or damaged it can affect the performance of the AOL software. From time to time, you may need to clear the cache to free up some space on your computer.

Note: This step is only applicable to AOL 9.0 and AOL 9.0 VR users.

To clear the graphics cache, take the following steps:

1. Open the AOL software but do not sign on.
2. Click Settings on the toolbar at the top of the screen.
3. Select Offline Storage.
4. Under the Graphics Settings heading, change the number in the box to 35 megabytes.
5. Click Save and restart the AOL software, but don't sign on.
6. Click Settings on the toolbar at the top of the screen, and select Offline Storage.
7. Increase the number in the Graphics Settings box to 60 megabytes and click Save.

Delete the current connection locations and redetect

To delete your current locations, take the following steps:

1. Close the AOL software.
2. Right-click the AOL icon in your Windows system tray (in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, next to the clock).
3. Select System Information, then click Connectivity in the left-hand column.
4. Click Reset Locations.
5. Click Yes, reset to confirm, and then click OK.
6. Close the System Information window.

Note: You can also use the One-Click Fix to delete current connection locations.

To set up a new location, open the AOL software and sign on. The AOL software will automatically detect your broadband connection and sign you on to the AOL Broadband service.

Rebuild the AOL adapter

The AOL Adapter is used by the AOL software to browse the internet. If it gets damaged, problems can occur.

Windows 7 - Run AOL System Information in compatibility mode

1. Click the Start globe and select All Programs.
2. Right-click the AOL System Information and select Properties.
3. Select the Compatibility tab.
4. Tick the box labelled Run this program in compatibility mode for.
5. Select Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the drop-down list.
6. Click OK.

To fix the AOL Adapter, take the following steps:

1. Close the AOL software.
2. Right-click the AOL icon in your Windows system tray (in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, next to the clock).
3. Select System Information.
4. Select Utilities from the menu on the left.
5. Look for Rebuild AOL Adapter and click the Start button to the right of it.
6. When complete, click OK.

Note: You can also use the One-Click Fix to rebuild the AOL Adapter

*To use this fix, you'll need to first download the One-Click Fixes. To run the fix you must be using the AOL software or Internet Explorer. One-Click Fixes are unavailable for Windows Vista and Macintosh users.
