The software that works with your DSL modem may be missing or doesn't work properly.
To fix the problem, try one or all of the following:

New broadband members: Check if your service has been activated
Please note: It can take up to 14 working days from the date of order to get AOL Broadband set up.
Check your physical connections
1. Unplug every device from your broadband-enabled phone line. Ensure to check every telephone point.
2. Locate the master phone socket and plug the filter directly into this socket.
3. Plug the DSL cable (the yellow line cable) into the DSL side of the filter.
4. Plug the other side of the yellow cable into your DSL modem or modem router.
5. Connect the DSL modem or modem router to the computer via the USB or ethernet cable provided.
Notes
-- For the best performance, we recommend that you always use your master socket and the DSL cable provided. Remove any extension cables that are present.
-- The cable connecting the DSL filter to the modem or modem router should be no longer than 10 metres.
-- Any other telephony devices connected to the phone line, such as a burglar alarm, or Sky digital must also be connected via a DSL filter.
-- Ensure that no more than four telephone sockets, including the master socket, are in use.
Restart the computer
1. Shut down your computer in the usual way, eg by clicking Start, then Shut Down.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Turn your computer back on and try to connect again.
Reset the connection locations
1. Close the AOL software.
2. Right-click the AOL icon in your Windows system tray (at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, next to the clock).
3. Select System Information and then click Connectivity in the left-hand column.
4. Click Reset Locations.
5. Click Yes, reset to confirm, then click OK.
6. Close the System Information window and restart your computer.
7. Start the AOL software and click Sign On or Connect to try to connect again.
Restart the connection device
Check your firewall software
Select your firewall below for steps on how to modify the firewall security to allow the AOL software to work with the firewall software. We recommend that you contact the firewall software supplier if you require any further information.
Windows 7
To configure your Windows 7 firewall to allow the AOL software to connect to the internet, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Select Large icons in the View by drop-down list on the right-hand side.
3. Click Windows Firewall.
4. Click the Allow a program or feature through Windows firewall link on the left-hand panel.
5. Click Change settings.
6. Tick the following programs: AOL 9.0 VR, AOL System Information and AOL TopSpeed.
7. Click OK. Your Windows Firewall is now set to allow the AOL software.
Windows Firewall
To configure your Windows firewall to allow the AOL software to connect to the internet, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Select Classic View from the panel on the left.
3. Double-click Windows Firewall.
4. Select the Exceptions tab.
Windows Vista users: Select Allow a program through Windows Firewall.
5. Click the Add Program button.
6. Select AOL and click OK.
7. Click the Add Program button again.
8. Select AOL System Information and click OK.
9. Click OK again.
McAfee® Personal Firewall
To configure your McAfee® Personal Firewall to allow the AOL software to connect to the internet, take the following steps:
1. Right-click the McAfee Personal Firewall icon in the system tray (in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen).
2. Select Options and then click Internet Applications.
3. Select AOL and click Allow Full Access.
4. Repeat this for all AOL programs that are listed in Internet Applications.
McAfee® 2007
To configure your McAfee® 2007 firewall to allow the AOL software to connect to the internet, take the following steps:
1. Open the McAfee Security Suite.
2. Click Internet and Network.
3. Click Configure and then click Advanced.
4. Select Program Permissions.
5. Select an AOL application that is blocked and then click Grant Full Access.
6. Repeat this for all blocked AOL applications.
7. Click OK and close the McAfee Security Suite.
Norton 2003/2005
To configure your Norton 2003/2005 firewall to allow the AOL software to connect to the internet, take the following steps:
1. Open Norton Internet Security/Personal Firewall.
2. Click Personal Firewall.
3. Click Configure and then select the Programs tab.
4. Select AOL Program Files and set them to Permit All.
5. Click OK and close Norton Internet Security.
Note: We have had some reports that the AOL software will not work with Norton Firewall. If this is the case, leave the firewall disabled and contact Norton technical support about the issue.
Norton Firewall 2007
To configure your Norton 2007 firewall to allow the AOL software to connect to the internet, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Select Classic View from the panel on the left.
3. Double-click Windows Firewall.
4. Select the Exceptions tab.
Windows Vista users: Select Allow a program through Windows Firewall.
5. Click the Add Program button.
6. Select AOL and click OK.
7. Click the Add Program button again.
8. Select AOL System Information and click OK.
9. Click OK again.
Note: We have had some reports that the AOL software will not work with Norton Firewall. If this is the case, leave the firewall disabled and contact Norton technical support about the issue.
ZoneAlarm 2.6 or 3.0
To configure your ZoneAlarm 2.6 or 3.0 firewall to allow the AOL software to connect to the internet, take the following steps:
1. Right-click the ZoneAlarm icon in the system tray and select ZoneAlarm Control Centre.
Note: If the ZoneAlarm icon is not present, you can run the program from the Start menu.
2. Click the Security or Firewall button.
3. Using the slider bar, set the Internet Settings to Medium.
4. Click the Program button.
5. Right-click WAOL.EXE (AOL) and select Remove.
Repeat this for the following files:
-- aoltpspd.exe
-- AOLacsd.exe
-- AOLDial.exe
6. Restart the AOL software and when ZoneAlarm asks to grant it access, click Yes.
BlackICE
To configure your BlackICE firewall to allow the AOL software to connect to the internet, take the following steps:
1. Open BlackICE Advanced Application Protection Settings.
2. Click Tools and then click Find.
3. Type waol.exe and click Find Next.
4. Once the file is found, check that Application Control and Communications Control are blank.
5. Repeat this process for the following files:
-- aoltpspd.exe
-- AOLacsd.exe
-- AOLDial.exe
6. Close the window and try connecting to the internet again.
PC-cillin
To configure your PC-cillin firewall to allow the AOL software to connect to the internet, take the following steps:
1. Open PC-cillin and select the Advanced tab.
2. Select Internet Traffic Control from the menu on the left.
3. Ensure that the Halt Internet Traffic button is not active.
4. Click Settings and then click Personal Firewall.
5. Click Security Level and make sure the security level is not set to High, as this will block incoming and outgoing traffic.
6. In the Exceptions List under the Description column, select AOL Connection.
7. Close and exit the Settings window.
8. Restart your computer and try to sign on to the internet again.
AVG Firewall
To configure your AVG Firewall to allow the AOL software to connect to the internet, take the following steps:
1. Open the AVG Control Centre.
2. Highlight Firewall and then click Configure and Applications.
3. If any AOL entries are listed, highlight each one and select Allow.
4. If no AOL entries are listed, click Add Application.
5. Click [ ... ], next to the Application Path box.
6. Navigate to C:\Program Files\AOL 9.0\.
7. Add and allow aol.exe, aoltray.exe and waol.exe.
8. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\.
9. Add and allow aoltpsdp.exe.
10. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\.
11. Add and allow aoldial.exe, acsd.exe, and aolacsd.exe.
12. When all of the AOL applications are added, click OK.
13. Close the AVG Control Centre.
Run the Quick Restore facility
Run a Quick Restore via the One-Click Fixes
Note: This step is for AOL 9.0 and 9.0 VR users only.
Windows 7 - Run AOL System Information in compatibility mode
1. Click the Start globe and select All Programs.
2. Right-click AOL System Information and select Properties.
3. Select the Compatibility tab.
4. Tick the box labelled Run this program in compatibility mode for.
5. Select Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the drop-down list.
6. Click OK.

Run a Quick Restore manually
1. Right-click the AOL icon in your Windows system tray (at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, next to the clock).
2. Select System Information.
3. Click Utilities or AOL software.
4. Select Quick Restore and click Proceed or OK.
5. Click OK when prompted.
*To use this fix, you'll need to first download the One-Click Fixes. To run the fix you must be using the AOL software or Internet Explorer. One-Click Fixes are unavailable for Windows Vista and Macintosh users.
Rebuild the AOL Adapter
Windows 7 - Run AOL System Information in compatibility mode
1. Click the Start globe and select All Programs.
2. Right-click the AOL System Information and select Properties.
3. Select the Compatibility tab.
4. Tick the box labelled Run this program in compatibility mode for.
5. Select Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the drop-down list.
6. Click OK.
To fix the AOL Adapter, take the following steps:
1. Close the AOL software.
2. Right-click the AOL icon in your Windows system tray (in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, next to the clock).
3. Select System Information.
4. Select Utilities from the menu on the left.
5. Look for Rebuild AOL Adapter and click the Start button to the right of it.
6. When complete, click OK.
Note: You can also use the One-Click Fix to rebuild the AOL Adapter
*To use this fix, you'll need to first download the One-Click Fixes. To run the fix you must be using the AOL software or Internet Explorer. One-Click Fixes are unavailable for Windows Vista and Macintosh users.
Check that the network card is installed correctly
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
Windows 98SE, Me and 2000 users: Click Start, then select Settings and Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.
Windows Vista users: Double-click Device Manager and then skip to step 5.
3. In the System Properties window, select the Hardware tab.
4. Click Device Manager.
5. Expand Network Adapters by clicking the plus sign next to it.
6. Check that the network card is installed. Also check that is not disabled and does not have any conflicts:
-- If you see a red cross next to the network card, this means that the adapter is disabled.
-- If you see a see a yellow exclamation mark this means the adapter has a conflict.
Follow the instructions below to check if your network card has problems in Windows 7:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Select Large icons in the View by drop-down list on the right-hand side.
3. Click Device Manager.
4. Click the arrow to the left of Network adapters.
5. Check that the network card is installed correctly and has no exclamation marks next to it.
Set the network card to obtain an IP address automatically
Windows 7
To set the network card to obtain an IP address automatically on a computer running Windows 7, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Select Large icons in the View by drop-down list on the right-hand side.
3. Click Network and Sharing Center.
4. In the left-hand panel, click the Change adapter settings link.
5. If you are using an Ethernet connection, right-click the Local Area Connection icon. If you are connecting wirelessly, right-click the Wireless network connection icon. Select Properties. If prompted for an administrative password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
6. Select Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and click the Properties button.
7. Ensure Obtain an IPv6 address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected. Click OK.
8. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click the Properties button.
9. Ensure Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected.
10. Click OK, then click OK again.
11. Close the Network Connections window. Open Internet Explorer and try to access the internet. Continue to the next step if you are still having problems connecting.
Windows Vista
To set the network card to obtain an IP address automatically on a computer running Windows Vista, take the following steps:
1. Click the Start globe and select Control Panel.
2. Select Classic View from the panel on the left.
3. Double-click Network and Sharing Centre.
4. Click Manage Network Connections on the left.
5. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties.
6. Click Continue if you see a User Account Control prompt.
7. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
8. Ensure that Obtain an IPv6 address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected and then click OK.
9. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
10. Ensure that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected then click OK.
11. Click OK to close Local Area Connection properties.
Windows XP
To set the network card to obtain an IP address automatically on a computer running Windows XP, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Select Classic View from the panel on the left.
3. Double-click Network Connections.
4. Right-click the LAN Connection and select Properties.
5. Double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). You may need to scroll down the list to see this item.
6. Ensure that Obtain an IP Address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected and click OK.
7. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection properties.
Windows 2000
To set the network card to obtain an IP address automatically on a computer running Windows 2000, take the following steps:
1. Click Start, then select Settings and Control Panel.
2. Double-click Network and Dial Up Connections.
3. Right-click the Local Area Connection and select Properties.
4. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list.
5. Click Properties.
6. Ensure that Obtain an IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Server address automatically are selected.
7. Click OK.
Windows Me and 98SE
To set the network card to obtain an IP address automatically on a computer running Windows Me or 98SE, take the following steps:
1. Click Start, then select Settings and Control Panel.
2. Double-click Network and select TCP/IP from the list.
3. Click the Properties button.
4. Ensure that Obtain an IP Address Automatically is selected.
5. Click the WINS Configuration tab.
6. Ensure that Use DHCP for WINS Resolution is selected.
7. Click OK.
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
To set the network card to obtain an IP address automatically on a Mac OS X Leopard, take the following steps:
1. Click the Apple icon in the top left of the screen and select System Preferences.
2. Click the Network icon.
3. Select Ethernet from the panel on the left.
4. Click the Advanced button.
5. Select the TCP/IP tab.
6. Beside Configure IPv4, use the drop-down list to select Using DHCP.
7. Click the Renew DHCP Lease button and then click OK.
8. Click Apply.
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.3 Panther
To set the network card to obtain an IP address automatically on a Mac OS X Tiger or Panther, take the following steps:
1. Click the Apple icon in the top left of the screen and select System Preferences.
2. Click the Network icon.
3. Ensure that Built-in Ethernet is selected from the Show drop-down list.
4. Select the TCP/IP tab.
5. Ensure that Using DHCP is selected from the Configure IPv4 drop-down list.
6. Click the Renew DHCP Lease button.
7. Click Apply Now.
Enable the DHCP Client and DNS Client services
Windows 7
To enable the DHCP Client and DNS Client services on a computer running Windows 7:
1. Click the Start globe and select Control Panel.
2. Select Large icons in the View by drop-down list on the right-hand side.
3. Click Administrative Tools.
4. Double-click Services.
5. Locate the DHCP Client in the list of services. Check if the status is stopped or blank.
6. If it is stopped or blank, right-click the DHCP Client and select Properties.
7. Click the Start button to start the DHCP Client service, set the Startup Type to Automatic using the drop-down list, then click Apply and OK.
8. Locate the DNS Client. Check if the status is stopped or blank.
9. If it is stopped or blank, right-click the DNS Client and select Properties.
10. Click Start to begin the DNS Client service, set the Startup Type to Automatic, then click Apply and OK.
Windows Vista
To enable the DHCP Client and DNS Client services on a computer running Windows Vista:
1. From the Start menu select Control Panel.
2. Select Classic View from the panel on the left.
3. Double-click Administrative Tools and then Services.
4. Click Continue at the prompt, if it appears.
5. Locate DHCP Client in the list of services and check if the status is stopped or blank.
6. If it the status is stopped or blank, right-click DHCP Client and select Properties.
7. Click the Start button to start the DHCP Client service, set the Startup Type to Automatic and then click Apply and OK.
8. Locate DNS Client and check if the status is stopped or blank.
9. If the status is stopped or blank, right-click the DNS Client and select Properties.
10. Click Start to begin the DNS Client service, set the Startup Type to Automatic, then click Apply and OK.
Windows XP
To enable the DHCP Client and DNS Client services on a computer running Windows XP:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Select Classic View from the panel on the left.
3. Double-click Administrative Tools and then Services.
4. Locate the DHCP Client in the list of services and check if the status is stopped or blank.
5. If the status is stopped or blank, right-click DHCP Client and select Properties.
6. Click the Start button to start the DHCP Client service, set the Startup Type to Automatic, then click Apply and OK.
7. Locate DNS Client and check if the status is stopped or blank.
8. If the status is stopped or blank, right-click DNS Client and select Properties.
9. Click Start to start the DNS Client service, set Startup Type to Automatic, then click Apply and OK.
Windows 2000
To enable the DHCP Client and DNS Client services on a computer running Windows 2000:
1. Click Start, then select Settings and Control Panel.
2. Double-click Administrative Tools and then Services.
3. Locate DHCP Client in the list and check if the status is stopped or blank.
4. If the status is stopped or blank, right-click DHCP Client and select Properties.
5. Click the Start button to start the DHCP Client service and set the Startup Type to Automatic.
6. Click Apply and then click OK.
7. Locate DNS Client and check if the status is stopped or blank.
8. If the status is stopped or blank, right-click DNS Client and select Properties.
9. Click Start to start the DNS Client service and set the Startup Type to Automatic.
10. Click Apply and then click OK.
Delete and reinstall the broadband modem drivers
To view the steps to delete and reinstall your broadband modem drivers, select your modem:
Uninstall the modem drivers
To uninstall your BT Voyager 105 modem drivers, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Click Classic View in the panel on the left.
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4. Select BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem from the program list.
5. Click Change/Remove and then click Yes.
6. Click OK and when instructed to do so, unplug the USB cable.
7. Click OK and then click No, restart later.
8. Insert the CD that came with your broadband modem into the CD-ROM drive. If the installer starts automatically, click Exit to cancel the installation.
9. Click Start and select My Computer.
10. Right-click the CD-ROM drive and select Explore.
11. Double-click Drivers and then double-click BT Voyager 105.
12. Double-click doctor105.exe and click Yes.
13. Restart your computer.
Reinstall the modem drivers
To reinstall your BT Voyager 105 modem drivers, take the following steps:
1. Insert the CD that came with the broadband modem into the CD-ROM drive. The setup program should start automatically.
2. Click Start Install and wait while the installer initialises.
3. Click Accept at the licence agreement.
4. When prompted, connect the USB cable. Windows will automatically detect the modem.
5. Click Exit to complete the installation.
If the setup program doesn't start automatically, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select My Computer.
2. Right-click the CD-ROM drive and select Explore.
3. Double-click the Drivers folder.
4. Double-click the file named V105 oE V1-0 and follow the instructions above.
Uninstall the modem drivers
To uninstall your BT Voyager 100 modem drivers, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Click Classic View in the panel on the left.
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4. Select BT Voyager 100 ADSL Modem from the program list and then click Change/Remove.
5. Click Yes to confirm.
6. Click OK and wait for the process to complete.
7. When instructed to do so, unplug the USB cable and click OK.
8. Click Yes to restart your computer.
Reinstall the modem drivers
To reinstall your BT Voyager 100 modem drivers, take the following steps:
1. Insert the CD that came with the broadband modem into the CD-ROM drive. The setup program should start automatically.
2. Click Start Install and wait while the installer initialises.
3. Click Accept to the licence agreement and when prompted, connect the USB cable. Windows will automatically detect the DSL modem.
4. Click Exit to complete the installation.
If the setup program doesn't start automatically, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select My Computer.
2. Right-click the CD-ROM drive and select Explore.
3. Double-click the Drivers folder.
4. Double-click Setup.exe and follow the instructions above.
Uninstall the modem drivers
To uninstall your BT Voyager 50 modem drivers, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Click Classic View in the panel on the left.
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4. Select BT Voyager ADSL Modem from the program list and click Change/Remove.
5. Click Yes and then click OK to the warning message.
6. When instructed to do so, unplug the USB cable and click OK.
7. Click Yes to restart your computer.
If this fails, try uninstalling the drivers via the installation CD or downloaded installation files:
1. Insert the installation CD and then click Start and select My Computer.
2. Right-click the CD drive and select Explore.
Note:
If you do not have the installation CD, click Start and select My Computer. Then, double click the C:/ drive, Program Files and Voyager modem 50 drivers.
3. Double-click Drivers and then double-click Voyager.
5. Double-click Doctor.exe.
6. Click Yes to the warning and restart your computer.
Reinstall the modem drivers
To reinstall your BT Voyager 50 modem drivers, take the following steps:
1. Insert the CD that came with the broadband modem into the CD-ROM drive. The setup program should start automatically.
2. Click Start Install and wait while the installer initialises.
3. Click Accept at the licence agreement.
4. When prompted, connect the USB cable. Windows will automatically detect the DSL modem.
5. Click Exit to complete the installation.
If the setup program does not launch automatically, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select My Computer.
2. Right-click the CD-ROM drive and select Explore.
3. Double-click VoyagerModem50Drivers.
4. Double-click ModemDriversInstall and follow the instructions above.
Uninstall the modem drivers
To uninstall your SpeedTouch 330 USB modem drivers, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Select SpeedTouch USB and click Change/Remove.
4. Click OK and then click OK again.
5. Click Finish to complete the process.
6. Restart your computer.
Reinstall the modem drivers
To reinstall your SpeedTouch 330 USB modem drivers, take the following steps:
1. Insert the SpeedTouch drivers CD into the CD-ROM drive and wait while the CD auto-launches.
2. Click Start Install and wait while the installer initialises.
3. Click OK and then click Yes to the licence agreement.
4. When prompted, connect the USB cable and click OK. Windows will auto-detect the modem.
5. Click Exit to complete the installation.
Uninstall the modem drivers
To uninstall your Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem drivers, take the following steps:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
Windows 2000, Me and Windows 98SE users: Click Start, then select Settings and Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Select the SpeedTouch USB software and click Change/Remove.
4. Click OK and then click OK again.
5. Click Finish and then restart the computer.
Reinstall the modem drivers
To reinstall your Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem drivers, take the following steps:
1. Insert the SpeedTouch driver CD into the CD-ROM drive and wait while the CD auto-launches.
2. Click Start Install and wait while the installer initialises.
3. Click OK at the prompt.
4. Click Yes to the licence agreement and wait while the drivers are installed.
5. When prompted, connect the USB cable and click OK. Windows will auto-detect the new device.
6. Click Exit.
