Error: The modem has reported that there is no dial tone

If you receive a "No Dial Tone" error while trying to sign on to a broadband connection, it is likely that the AOL software is trying to connect through your analogue (dial-up) modem instead of broadband.

Try one or all of the following steps to resolve the problem.

Setup a broadband location

Before setting up a broadband location, firstly ensure that the broadband modem is securely connected to a USB port on the PC then work through the following steps:

AOL 9.0 and below:

1. On the AOL Sign-On screen, click Sign On Options.
2. Click Add a Location.
3. Type a location name (eg Broadband) then click Next.
AOL 8.0 and below: Select AOL UK Broadband Connection from the list.
4. Click Next.
5. Click Sign On to try to connect to AOL again.

AOL 9.0 VR:

1. On the AOL sign-on screen, click Connect Options.
2. Click Check for high-speed connection.
3. Click Sign On to try to connect to AOL again.

Run a Dial-Up Networking test

DUN Test using BT Voyager modem

3. Repeat the above steps with the AOL Test 2 button.

DUN Tests using the Alcatel SpeedTouch modem

Use the Speedtouch dial-up icon on the desktop to carry out these tests. If the icon is not present please remove and reinstall the drivers.

1. Test 1: In the Username box type: (case sensitive) - ISUR_AOLDSL@americaonline.aol.com
In the Password box type: (case sensitive) - roughalien, and click Connect.

2. Test 2: In the Username box type: (case sensitive) - bt_test_user@startup_domain
Password: {leave this field blank}, and click Connect.

Proceed to the next step but if any of the tests fail, make a note of the DUN Error Code in case you need to contact Member Services.

Check your computer for spyware

Spyware is a prime cause of connection problems and can slow down your computer. We recommend that you run spyware protection such as Ad-Aware or Spybot - Search & Destroy regularly.

For more information about spyware, see Safety, Security & Privacy Help.

Are you using firewall software?

An active firewall on your computer could restrict the AOL software from making a connection. If you have firewall software installed, please configure it to allow the AOL software to access the internet.

Select your firewall below for steps on how to modify the firewall security to allow the AOL software to work with the firewall software. We recommend that you contact the firewall software supplier if you require any further information.
