Please note that when you see temporary ‘your software is disabled’ alerts, while some features related to system protection may be affected when you see the alerts, the overall security should not be impacted.
The alert may have ceased, in which case you do not need to take any further action.
If the alert continues, there are several methods to resolve this. Please progress to the next method if the first method does not resolve your issue. Please follow the following instructions:
Method 1
a) Click on the McAfee client (you can find this by clicking on the McAfee symbol on your PC screen desktop) and click on "Fix" or
b) Click on the Mcafee client and click on “Updates” in the task bar within the McAfee client
If your computer is still experiencing this issue, and you are unable resolve it permanently by clicking the Fix button, continue to the solutions below:
Method 2
Make sure that there is no virus in the system and/or any other AntiVirus or previous version of McAfee VirusScan that might be conflicting with the McAfee VirusScan installation.
You may check in the Add/Remove Programs list to ensure there is no other AntiVirus. To check this, go to:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Double click Add or Remove Programs. Look for any previous versions of McAfee VirusScan or of other security providers such as Symantec, Norton, PC-cillin or Trend Macro. Click remove those programs and follow the steps provided. Please also check under C:/Program Files to see if you have any folder with the name Symantec, Norton, PC-Cillin or Trend Macro.
Please double click on your System clock that is located at the bottom right corner of your Screen and check your System Date and make sure that it should be current.
If you have Windows 2000 or XP installed then follow these steps:
1. Please click on Start > Run > Type in services.msc > press Enter.
2. Locate McAfee.com McShield > double click on it > select Automatic in the Startup Type box.
3. Now, please click on Recovery tab > select Restart the service in the First Failure box > click OK > Restart your computer.
Method 3
If your computer is still experiencing this issue, and you are unable resolve it permanently continue to the solutions below:
Clear the local cached copy of the HackerWatch database file and download a fresh copy. To do this:
Windows XP / 2000:
1. Click Start, Run, type Explorer.exe, and click OK.
2. Navigate to C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMcAfeeHackerWatchdata.
3. Delete the file HwLocal.xdb.
4. Close Windows Explorer and restart your computer.
5. Right-click the M icon in the system tray (near the clock) and select Updates.
Windows Vista:
1. Right-click the Windows button and select Explore.
2. Navigate to C:ProgramDataMcAfeeHackerWatchdata.
3. Delete the file HwLocal.xdb.
4. Close Windows Explorer and restart your computer.
5. Right-click the M icon in the system tray (near the clock) and select Updates.
Note: If you cannot find the folders listed above in Windows Explorer, copy and paste the full path into the address bar of Windows Explorer and press ENTER. If your issue is not resolved, continue to the steps below.
Method 4
Run MVT
1. Right-click the M icon and select Open Security Center.
2. From the Basic Menu, select McAfee Virtual Technician under common tasks on the left.
3. Follow the prompts to complete an MVT scan of the installation.
Method 5
Update the permissions to the logs folder. To do this:
Windows XP / 2000:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Go to the following link:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/SysGrdOptnFx.bat
3. When prompted, Save the file to your desktop.
4. After the download completes, double-click SysGrdOptnFx.bat.
After the SysGrdOptnFx.bat completes, verify the SystemGuard service is running. If it is not, start the service.
5. Click Start and select Run.
6. Type services.msc, and click OK.
7. Right-click the McAfee SystemGuard service and select Start.
Windows Vista:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Go to the following link:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/SysGrdOptnFx.bat
3. When prompted, Save the file to your desktop.
4. Right-click SysGrdOptnFx.bat and select Run As Administrator.
After the SysGrdOptnFx.bat completes, verify the SystemGuard service is running. If it is not, start the service.
1. Click the Windows button and select Search.
2. Type services.msc, and click OK.
3. Right-Click the McAfee SystemGuard service and select Start.
