How can I tell if an offer is legitimate or a scam?

  • A basic rule is: If it's too good to be true or contains a threat to cancel your AOL account, health insurance, or some other service, it is probably a scam.

  • Remember that AOL will never ask you for your screen name and password by email, over the telephone or in an instant message.

  • Always be suspicious of now or never and free for a price offers, or Get Rich Quick and other business schemes.

  • Also, be suspicious of any email that claims you need to buy now or immediately or risk missing out on the offer.

  • Does the business that sent you the offer have a physical address? Legitimate businesses will list a street or P.O. box address.
