Configuring a SpeedTouch 545 modem router

This document describes how to install the Thomson SpeedTouch 545 modem router on Windows XP or Windows 2000. We recommend that you print this guide to use as a reference. Before setting up your home network, ensure that you check the essential information for connecting via your modem router - in particular, that your screen name and password are in the correct format.

Before you begin, you will also need the following:

  • The modem router itself, its power supply and setup CD
  • A length of ethernet cable to connect the router to the PC
  • Your PC must have a correctly-installed network card
  • Your PC must have AOL version 8.0 (or above) installed

We also recommend that you close down any unnecessary applications running on your computer. You should plug in and switch on your modem router and connect it to the PC you are using to configure that modem router, using an ethernet cable. This cable should be included in the device packaging.

You also need to connect the modem router to your broadband line via your master telephone socket using an ADSL filter. If you have previously connected to the internet using a modem, you will need to remove this, but we recommend that you retain your modem, as you may need it again at a later date. Note that all phone sockets in your house should be equipped with an ADSL filter, up to a maximum of 4 filters per house.

Set up your Thomson SpeedTouch 545

Insert the SpeedTouch setup CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer that is connected to the modem router and click the Initial Setup option. If the CD does not auto-run, locate the contents of the CD via Windows Explorer and double-click the menu.exe file.

To configure your modem router:

1. Select Setup my SpeedTouch to launch the SpeedTouch setup wizard.

2. Click Next to begin setting up the modem router. If the license agreement is displayed at this stage, you must read and accept the terms in order to continue with the installation process.

3. At this point, the wizard attempts to detect the presence of the modem router connected to the computer. Wait a few moments for this to be completed. If the modem router is detected, a screen will display showing the device detected. Click Next to continue.

Note: If no devices are found, check that the device is correctly attached and that it is powered on. (See the Thomson troubleshooting guide for more information).

4. By default UK will be set as the region, and Provider All. Choose the UK (Default Settings) option in the Service selection box. Then click Next.

5. Enter your original master screen name (including @aol.com) and the password for that AOL screen name.

Important information:
  • The screen name is case-sensitive and must be in lower case
  • The screen name must not contain any spaces
  • The suffix @aol.com must be added after the AOL screen name
  • The password cannot be longer than eight characters
  • The password must consist of letters and numbers only (ie no spaces or special characters such as: ! £ ? or %)

If necessary, the password can be changed by signing on to AOL with the original master screen name and going to AOL Keyword: Password.

6. The last option on the next screen provides an opportunity to password-protect access to the modem router itself (to stop other users from tampering with its configuration etc). There is a drop-down list to choose various options:
  • No User Name and Password (the default)
  • No User Name and the Password set to the Serial Number of the Modem/Router (printed on the bottom)
  • No User Name and the Password set to the same as that used for the AOL connection Password
  • Same User Name and Password used for the AOL connection

Ensure that you select a memorable combination and make a note of this user name and password, if necessary, then click Next.

7. A summary of the configuration options to be used by the router is displayed. Confirm these are correct and click Next.

8. The modem router configuration will now be stored which may take a few moments. Once this has completed, click Next.

9. Click Finish to complete the SpeedTouch setup wizard.

Note: Saving the settings and establishing a connection can take up to a minute. During this time, the modem router will reboot and go through the same LED light sequence observed when you first powered it up.

Set up additional computers on your home network

If you wish to set up additional computers on your home network, connect the network port on each computer to a spare port on the modem router using an RJ45 ethernet cable.

For the SpeedTouch 545 modem router to make a wireless connection it must have had the SpeedTouch 010 or SpeedTouch 110 wireless card installed. This card fits into a slot on the side of the SpeedTouch 545 modem router.

We recommend that you protect your wireless network with 128 bit WEP encryption to ensure that no-one else can access your wireless data or join your network without permission.

Connect to AOL

To set up AOL to work on your home network, you need to change the settings to connect via your modem router.

1. Start AOL but do not sign on. Instead, click Sign On Options or Connect Options on the sign-on screen.
2. Click Expert Setup.
3. Click Add Location.
4. Type a name for the location in the Location Name box (eg Router), then click Next.
5. Choose Broadband (High-Speed, cable, DSL, or other ISP), then click Next.
6. Tick Automatically reconnect me and ignore interruptions... then click Next.
7. Select Automatic Connection, then click Next.
8. Click Sign on to AOL now, then sign on to AOL as usual using any of your screen names.

The next time you start the AOL software, you'll notice 'Router' (or whatever name you gave the location) is available as one of the options in the Location box. This allows you to easily switch between using a modem router connection and a different connection (for example, a dial-up modem) if you wish.

Connect another PC
