Configuring a SpeedTouch 510 modem router

This document describes how to install the Thomson SpeedTouch 510 modem router on Windows XP or Windows 2000. The Thomson 510 is a DSL-enabled modem router that allows you to directly connect four machines to the internet through a single device. Each machine is connected to the router via an RJ45 ethernet cable. We recommend that you print this guide to use as a reference.

Preparation

Before setting up the home network, check the essential information for connecting via the modem router - in particular, that the screen name and password are in the correct format.

Ensure that you have the following:

  • The router, the power supply and the setup CD
  • An Ethernet cable to connect the modem router to the computer
  • The computer has a correctly installed ethernet network card
  • The computer has AOL version 8.0 (or above) installed

It is recommended that any unnecessary applications running on the computer are shut down.

Physical setup

1. Connect the modem router to the first computer using the supplied ethernet cable.

The cable can be inserted into any of the router's four ethernet ports. Up to four computers can be directly connected to the router using additional ethernet straight cables (one is supplied in the box).

2. Connect the ADSL cable (RJ11) into the port marked DSL.

3. Connect the modem router to the ADSL broadband-enabled telephone line via a convenient telephone socket using an ADSL filter. It is important that filters are fitted to ALL other telephone extension sockets of the same telephone line that are used with other telephone apparatus (eg phones, faxes, answering machines, TV set-top boxes, alarm systems, etc.)

4. If you have previously connected to the internet using an analogue modem, you should disconnect this from your computer and telephone socket. The modem is no longer required for your broadband connection, but you should retain it for future troubleshooting.

5. Connect the modem router power supply cable into the port.

6. Plug the other end into a mains socket. Switch on the modem router by pressing the small round button on its front. The modem router should power up and start to initialise (Power LED will start to glow orange while the unit goes through its power-up test routine, which lasts approximately 20 seconds, then flash green before going steady green) .

Install your modem router

To begin the installation, insert the SpeedTouch setup CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer that is connected to the modem router. The CD should display the following screen automatically.

(If the CD does not 'auto-run', locate the contents of the CD via Windows Explorer and double-click the menu.exe file).

To install the modem router:

1. Click Initial Setup and select Set up my SpeedTouch, then click Next. If the license agreement is displayed, you must read and accept the terms of the licence agreement to continue with the installation process.

2. The setup wizard will attempt to detect the modem router connected to the PC. Please wait a few moments for this to complete.

3. If the router is detected, a screen will be displayed showing the details of the router. Click Next to continue.

Note: If no devices are found, check that the router is correctly attached and that it is powered on. (See the Thomson troubleshooting guide for more information.)

6. The Service Provider screen will display. By default, UK is set as the region, and Provider All. Choose UK PPPoE Default Settings in the Service selection box and click Next.

7. Enter your original master screen name and the password for that AOL screen name.

  • The screen name is case sensitive and must be in lower case
  • The screen name must not contain any spaces
  • The suffix @aol.com must be included after the AOL screen name.
  • The password cannot be longer than eight characters
  • The password must consist of letters and numbers only (ie no spaces or special characters such as: ! £ ? or %)

If necessary, the password can be changed by signing on to AOL with the original master screen name and going to AOL Keyword: Password.

8. Select BT as the Telephone Service Provider, then click Next.

9. The next screen provides an opportunity to password protect access to the router (to stop other users from tampering with its configuration etc). There is a drop-down list to choose various options:

  • No User Name and Password (the default)
  • No User Name and the Password set to the Serial Number of the Modem/Router (printed on the bottom)
  • No User Name and the Password set to the same as that used for the AOL connection Password
  • Same User Name and Password used for the AOL connection

11. The router configuration will now be stored, which may take a few moments. Once this has completed, click Next.

12. Click Finish to complete the SpeedTouch setup wizard.

Note: Saving the settings and establishing a connection can take up to a minute. If a connection cannot immediately be established, it does not mean that there is a connection problem. All three indicator LEDs should be GREEN, confirming the router has synchronised with the ADSL signal, and AOL screen name and password have been correctly entered allowing the router to sign on to the AOL service. If the @ symbol LED flashes alternately orange and green, it means that the wrong user name and password have been entered and the router cannot sign on, even though the ADSL signal has synchronised.

13. If you wish to set up additional computers on your home network, connect the network port on each computer to a spare port on the router using an RJ45 Ethernet cable.

Connect to AOL

To set up AOL to work on your home network, you need to change the settings to connect via your modem router.

1. Start AOL but do not sign on. Instead, click Sign On Options or Connect Options on the sign-on screen.
2. Click Expert Setup.
3. Click Add Location.
4. Type a name for the location in the Location Name box (eg Router), then click Next.
5. Choose Broadband (High-Speed, cable, DSL, or other ISP), then click Next.
6. Tick Automatically reconnect me and ignore interruptions... then click Next.
7. Select Automatic Connection, then click Next.
8. Click Sign on to AOL now, then sign on to AOL as usual using any of your screen names.

The next time you start the AOL software, you'll notice 'Router' (or whatever name you gave the location) is available as one of the options in the Location box. This allows you to easily switch between using a modem router connection and a different connection (for example, a dial-up modem) if you wish.

Note: If additional computers do not connect to your network (because the network port is not in its default DHCP mode configuration), insert the SpeedTouch CD in each of the additional computers in turn and choose the setup wizard option again. This time the wizard will detect that the router has already been configured and you should select the option automatically to change the LAN configuration.
