Configuring a Netgear WG121 wireless adapter

This document describes how to install the Netgear WG121 wireless adapter on a PC running Windows XP or Windows 2000. We recommend that you print this guide to use as a reference.

The WG121 wireless adapter is a USB device used to connect your computer to your wireless network. It is used to connect the host machine to a wireless router, allowing the host PC to access the internet.

Set up your modem router

It is recommended that you set up your AOL supported modem router using the AOL Easy Installer or manufacturers CD before you setup your wireless adapter.

When you set up your modem router, we recommend that you enable the security features to keep your wireless network protected. If your modem router supports WPA, we recommend that you use this option. If WPA is unavailable, please set up WEP 128 bit encryption.

When you set up your wireless modem router you will be asked for a Wireless Network Name (SSID) and an Encryption or Network Key (Passphrase). You will need to use both of these later when you add your computer to your wireless network.

Install and connect your wireless adapter

To start the installation, insert the installation CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer that is going to use the adapter before attaching the USB cable. You must follow the installation process and ONLY plug the adapter into the USB port on the computer when prompted.

When the CD is inserted in the machine, it should auto-run.
Note: If it does not run automatically, double-click My Computer on your Windows desktop, then right-click your CD-ROM drive and choose Auto-play. If the installation screen still does not appear, double-click the CD-ROM drive, then double-click SETUP.

To install your wireless adapter:

1. Select Install Driver and Utility to start the configuration program, then click Next.

2.Select Europe, then click Next.

4. Click OK.

5. Read the Netgear license agreement and accept the terms by clicking Yes. You cannot proceed with the installation unless you agree to the license agreement.

6. The installation directory will default to a folder within your program files (eg C:Program FilesNETGEAR). However, you may prefer to use a different folder and can select a new location by clicking Browse. When you're happy with the install directory, click Next.

7. The next screen allows you to choose the folder that will contain links to the programs that are being installed. This folder will be accessible from the Start > Programs menu.

8. With all the initial setup information provided, the installer will begin to copy files on to your computer. Windows XP users may receive a warning message. Click Continue Anyway.

9. The wireless adapter software is now installed. Connect the adapter to a USB port on your computer using the USB cable.

10. Windows XP users: Select Install the software automatically and click Next, then click Yes.

Connect to your wireless network

You now need to consider the security settings on the router that you would like to connect to. If it is set up as a public device and is broadcasting its presence as an available wireless network, the adapter will connect to it and you will see the Netgear icon on the taskbar, currently showing red (unconnected), turn green (connected).

You may not be connected to the internet, but this does indicate that your computer is communicating with the router. If the router does not have a WEP key enabled, you will be able to access the internet, or set up AOL to use the connection.

If there are security features enabled, you will need to configure the adapter to access your wireless router.

To access your wireless network:

1. Double-click the Netgear icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.
2. There are two key areas on the main screen that may need configuring. If your wireless router is set to not broadcast its network name (SSID), you should enter it in the Network Name (SSID) box.
3. If your router is set up to require a WEP key, you must enter it in the relevant box of the Security section at the right.
4. The wireless adapter will then communicate with the router and authenticate the settings.

Connect to AOL

To set up AOL to work on your home network, you need to change the settings to connect via your modem router.

1. Start AOL but do not sign on. Instead, click Sign On Options or Connect Options on the sign-on screen.
2. Click Expert Setup.
3. Click Add Location.
4. Type a name for the location in the Location Name box (eg Router), then click Next.
5. Choose Broadband (High-Speed, cable, DSL, or other ISP), then click Next.
6. Tick Automatically reconnect me and ignore interruptions... then click Next.
7. Select Automatic Connection, then click Next.
8. Click Sign on to AOL now, then sign on to AOL as usual using any of your screen names.

The next time you start the AOL software, you'll notice 'Router' (or whatever name you gave the location) is available as one of the options in the Location box. This allows you to easily switch between using a modem router connection and a different connection (for example, a dial-up modem) if you wish.
