Home networking: Before you begin

Before and during the setup of your modem router, ensure that:

  • You use your original master screen name to set up your modem router and to access the internet.
  • You enter your screen name in the correct format:
-- Enter the screen name in lower case
-- Add @aol.com after the screen name
    -- Remove any spaces
For example: If your current screen name is Jack and Jill, you should enter jackandjill@aol.com in your modem router setup.
  • The password for your screen name follows our guidelines
  • A DSL filter is connected to every telephone socket in your home where a telephony device will be used
  • Your computers meet the minimum system requirements
Go to Network Setup to find out how to set up your home network.

For a wireless network, ensure that:

  • You have a wireless adapter to connect each computer
  • You have checked whether your router needs an upgrade card to connect wirelessly
  • You have considered the security requirements of your network

For a wired network, ensure that:

  • Each computer you wish to connect has an ethernet card
  • You have a length of ethernet cable to connect each computer
  • Each cable does not exceed the maximum recommended length (100m)
