How do I create a secure passphrase?

WPA passwords are called passphrases and are used to secure your wireless network by stopping unauthorised access. The key should be easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess.

Use the following guidelines to create a secure passphrase:

  • Create a passphrase that is between 8 and 64 characters in length
  • Use numbers (0-9) and letters (A-Z)
  • Use a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters. As the passphrase is case sensitive using upper and lower case will make it harder to guess
  • Put a capital letter in the middle of the key
  • Replace a letter with a number, for example zero (0) instead of the letter 'O'
Things to avoid:
  • Do not use family names as they can be easily guessed
  • Do not use pet names
  • Do not use numbers only or letters only
  • Do not use birthdays of family members
  • Do not use a phrase that can be easily guessed, such as your address
