The modem is getting a busy signal

The number you are dialing may be busy. The problem may be due to a high number of requests to connect to AOL or with the access phone numbers.

To fix the problem, wait five seconds and try to connect to the AOL service again. If the problem continues, try one or all of the following:

Check the phone number AOL is dialling

You can add, edit or delete any access phone number shown in the list box in the Confirm Access Phone Numbers window.

AOL 9.0 users:

1. In the AOL sign-on window, click Sign On Options.
2. In the AOL Setup window:
If you have only one location, click Edit Numbers.
If you have more than one location, select a location and click Edit Numbers.
3. Verify that the numbers listed are correct.
4. If the numbers shown are correct, click Next.
5. If the numbers shown are not correct, click Add, Edit, or Delete to make changes, and then click Next.
6. Click Sign On to AOL Now to sign on immediately or click Make More Changes to make additional changes.

AOL 9.0 VR users:

1. On the AOL sign-on screen, select a location and click Connect Options.
2. Verify that the numbers listed in Dial-Up Location Details are correct.
3. If the numbers shown are correct, click Close.
4. If the numbers shown are not correct, click Quick Edit to make changes, and then click Close.
5. If the access numbers are automatically selected you do not need to make any changes.

Notes:
  • If you have more than one access phone number defined, you may also want to reorder the numbers.
  • To find out more about which access numbers should be used, see AOL Access Numbers.
  • To select the best access number for your area, sign on to AOL and go to AOL Keyword: Best Number.


Check your dialling options


Special dialling options available through your phone company can sometimes have an impact on your connection to AOL.

AOL 9.0 users:

1. On the sign-on screen, click Sign On Options.
2. In the AOL Setup window:
If you have only one location, click Edit Numbers.
If you have more than one location, select a location and click Edit Numbers.
3. Click Dialling Options.
4. Check any dialling options that apply to the phone number you are editing.
5. Click OK to return to the Edit AOL Access Phone Numbers window and click Next.
6. Click Sign On to AOL Now to sign on immediately or click Make More Changes to make additional changes.

AOL 9.0 VR users:

1. On the AOL sign-on screen select a location and click Connect Options.
2. Click Quick Edit to see your dialling options and check that they are correct.
3. Make any necessary changes and click Save.
4. Click Close to return to the sign-on screen.


Delete and redetect connection locations


Delete current locations:

1. From the sign-on screen, click Sign On Options.
2. Highlight each location and click Rename/Delete Location to delete all locations.

* Use the One-Click Fix to delete current connection locations.

Set up a new location:

1. From the sign-on screen, click Sign-On Options.
2. Click Create Dial-Up Location.
3. Select Dial-Up and click Next.
4. If you have more than one dial-up modem, you will be asked to select a modem.
5. Select as many dialling options as appropriate and click Next.
6. AOL will now get access phone numbers for you to connect with.
7. Confirm the location details and click Confirm and Sign On.



*To use this fix, you'll need to first download the One-Click Fixes. To run the fix you must be using the AOL software or Internet Explorer. One-Click Fixes are unavailable for Windows Vista and Macintosh users.


Check and reset your modem



Run the AOL Auto Fix


When you receive this error message click the Fix It For Me button to have AOL automatically run through some troubleshooting steps to correct the problem.
