Send an instant message

Using an instant message (IM), you can send a short text message to your friends who are online at the same time as you, or using any compatible services (such as AIM). This message will then pop up on their screens with a 'ding!'

To send an instant message:

1. Open a new instant message window by clicking the IM icon on the toolbar at the top of your screen. Alternatively you can press the Ctrl and i keys at the same time.
2. In the Send To: box, type the screen name of the person you want to send your message to.

Tip:Click the Available? button to check whether that screen name is online before typing your message.

3. Type your message in the large message box
4. When ready, click Send and your message will instantly pop up on the other person's screen (if they are online).

You can also use your Buddy List to send instant messages. When you create a Buddy List, you can see when your friends come online while you're online. By double-clicking on their name you are able to send them an IM straight away.
