Send an instant message

Using an AOL instant message (IM), you can send a short text message to any AOL member who is currently online using AOL or any compatible services (such as AOL Instant Messenger). This message will then pop up on their screens with a 'ding!'

To send an instant message, simply click the IM icon on the AOL toolbar at the top of your screen (beside Chat).
(AOL 4.0 or 5.0 users, click People on the AOL toolbar, then choose Instant Message. AOL 9.0 VR users simply click the People icon.)

1. In the instant message box, type the screen name of the person you want to send your message to.
2. Click the Available? button to confirm that they are signed on.
3. Type your message. When you click the Send button, your message will instantly pop up on the other person's screen.

Holding the Ctrl and i keys down together also opens an IM screen.

You can also use your Buddy List to send instant messages. When you create a Buddy List you can see when your friends come online while you're online. By double-clicking on their name you are able to send them an IM straight away. These two features work great together!
