Assistive technology
Assistive technology (AT) refers to devices or aids that can help a person overcome functional limitations and perform tasks that might otherwise not be possible.
If you use screen readers, screen magnifiers, alternatives to the keyboard or mouse, TypeTalk or even a hearing aid, you are using Assistive Technology. We continually work with developers of assistive technology to enhance the accessibility of the service.
Tips for using assisitive technology
Visit any of the following pages:
- Using screen readers
- Using other visual aids (screen magnifiers, keyboard shortcuts)
- Mobility aids (alternatives to the keyboard or mouse)
- Cognitive aids (spell checker, picture icons)
- Useful features for the deaf and hard of hearing (TypeTalk, Instant Messages, chat)
Learning more about assistive technology
If you are interested in learning more about AT for yourself, a child, a parent or a friend, there are a number of resources on the web and in communities across the country. In particular, we recommend the US-based Alliance for Technology Access at www.ataccess.org, and in the UK, AbilityNet at www.abilitynet.org.uk.
