Work through the following steps to set up Microsoft Outlook 2000 to send and receive your AOL email.
Create a new AOL email account in Outlook
The first step to setting up Outlook is to create an AOL email account. This will use your existing AOL account.
To create a new AOL email account in Outlook:
1. Launch Outlook.
Note: If you receive a message to register Outlook as the default manager for Mail, News, and Contacts, click the Yes button.
2. Click the Tools menu, then click Accounts.
3. Click the Add button, then click Mail.
4. In the Display name: box, enter your name as you would like it to appear on your outgoing email messages.
5. Click the Next button.
6. In the Email address: box, enter your full email address, for example, JSmith@aol.com.
7. Click the Next button.
8. Click the My incoming mail server is a drop-down menu, choose IMAP, then click it.
9. In the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: box, type imap.aol.com.
10. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: box, type smtp.aol.com.
11. Click the Next button.
12. In the Account name: box, type your AOL screen name.
13. In the Password: box, type your AOL password.
Note: If you want the Outlook 2000 software to save your AOL password, click the Remember password box to place a tick in it.
14. Click the Next button.
15. Under Which method do you want to use to connect to the Internet?, choose the Connect using my local area network (LAN) option by clicking it.
Note: This works even if you are not connected through a LAN.
16. Click the Next button.
17. Click the Finish button.
Configure your AOL email account in Outlook
Outlook must be correctly configured to be able to connect to AOL.
To configure your AOL email account in Outlook 2000:
1. Launch Outlook.
2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Accounts.
3. Click the Mail tab.
4. Click imap.aol.com to highlight it, then click the Properties button.
5. Click the Servers tab.
6. In the Incoming Mail Server section, verify your AOL screen name and password are entered.
7. In the Outgoing Mail Server section, click the My server requires authentication box to place a tick in it.
8. Click the Apply button.
9. Click the Advanced tab.
10. In the Outgoing Mail (SMTP): box, type 587.
11. Click the Apply button.
12. Click the OK button to close the imap.aol.com Properties window.
13. Click the Close button.
