Upgrade your AOL software

You can upgrade your AOL software to a higher version that is supported by your computer. When you upgrade your current copy of the AOL software, all your existing settings such as your screen names, Personal Filing Cabinet, favourite places, software settings, and AOL downloads will be transferred to the new version.

As installing a new copy of the AOL software may require you to restart your computer, we recommend that you print this article.

We suggest you make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements before installing the software. If you install the AOL software on a computer that doesn't meet the system requirements, you may experience problems with either the software or the computer.

Use the AOL installation CD to upgrade your AOL software

1. Insert the AOL CD into your CD drive. The installation process will start automatically.
2. Click the Current Members button.
3. Click the Upgrading to a new version of AOL on this computer option to select it, then click the Next button. This will search for existing copies of AOL software on your computer.
4. To copy settings from the most recently used version of the AOL software, click the Next button.
Note: If multiple copies of AOL software are present on your computer, you can click the desired copy, then click the Next button.
5. Click the Next button to install the AOL software in the standard location (for example, C:Program FilesAOL 9.0).

Upgrade the AOL software from the AOL website

You can download AOL 9.0 VR from the AOL website. If you have a high speed connection the download usually takes about 5 minutes. If you have a dial-up connection, it could take a longer duration of time to download.

Note: You must be running Windows Vista or Windows XP to download AOL 9.0 VR. If you do not know which version of the Microsoft Windows operating system is installed on your computer, follow the instructions found at: How to determine which version of Windows I have.

To upgrade the AOL software from the AOL website:

1. On the internet, go to http://info.aol.co.uk/downloads.
2. In the Download AOL 9.0 VR for Microsoft Windows section click the Get it now link.
3. Click the Download button next to the version of the AOL software you wish to download.
4. Click the Save button in the window that pops up.
5. Select the directory where you want to save the file, then click the Save button.
6. Once the download is complete, click the Open button.
Note: Be sure to write down the filename and path to the directory where you save the file.
7. Locate the AOL setup file that you saved on your hard drive, then double-click it.
8. Follow the instructions to install the AOL software.
