You've probably heard familiar sounds such as the 'Welcome' and the 'You have email' voices in the chat room, and seen people type something like '{S noise}' in the room too. These are .wav files (Windows sound files) being 'sent' to the room. This page explains how you can set up your AOL to hear those sounds and send some of your own.
What do I need to do to hear sounds played in chat rooms?
- You must have chat room sounds enabled
- You must have either a sound card or speaker driver properly installed
- The sound file must be located where Windows can find it
- The sound files must be in the .wav format
How do I enable my chat room sounds?
This is easy. First of all sign on to AOL and go to AOL Keyword: Preferences, click Chat and tick the box Enable chat room sounds.
In which directory should I store my sound files?
Be sure to download or move any .wav files you want to use to your AOL directory, the one normally named C:AOL4.0, C:AOL5.0, or C:AOL6.0, (depending on the version of AOL software that you are using).
How do I play a sound file in a chat room?
If you want to play for example a sound named hello.wav in a chat room, enter this text in the chat buffer at the bottom of the screen and press Enter, or click Send:
{S hello}
So the format is: {S
Note:if all you are sending to the room is the .wav command with no following text you can omit the ending "}" e.g., {S Welcome
BUT, if you are sending a .wav command AND typing text after the wave,
e.g., {S Welcome} to the room, X, then you must ALWAYS include the ending "}".
