What to do when a new virus strikes
The first thing is to remember not to panic. Newspapers often exaggerate the threat but that doesn't mean you should not take the threat seriously. Follow these tips to ensure that your online experience remains virus-free. (Remember, as an AOL member you are already protected by free email scanning.)
- Many anti-virus software providers (see sample list below) issue specific virus checkers and removal software for free on their web sites. Use these to remove some of the most dangerous viruses and put your mind at ease.
- If you do not have anti-virus software installed this would be a good time to get some. Go to
AntiVirus Centre for details of AOL's Virus Scan Online service.
- If you are an AOL Broadband user, make sure you have the free firewall installed to help guard your PC against worms and other types of viruses which are not spread by email or downloaded files.
- Some viruses and worms are designed to attack weaknesses in Microsoft operating systems. Microsoft regularly release security patches to prevent such problems. You can use the Windows Update feature (in your Windows Start menu) to keep up-to-date with Microsoft's latest security patches.
